National Marine Sanctuaries in North America: Where Do We Fit in?

The US has fourteen National Marine Sanctuaries, designated between 1976 and 2000, plus one Marine National Monument, designated in 2006.

The idea of designating the entire Salish Sea as a Marine Sanctuary was first proposed by Salish Sea Foundation in late 2012. The current vision is to gain the support and endorsement first of people from the many Coast Salish tribes and First Nations, who have lived around the Salish Sea for thousands of years, and then of citizens and lawmakers of British Columbia and Washington State.
